I wanted to keep a log of our trip for myself and anyone else who wants to see what the girls are up to. I figured here is the best place for that. For today, I'm just going to write about our first three days and I'll post pictures later. (Ari put a penny in the SD reader slot, so I need to get a USB cable and hook up the camera later :)
Day 1: Home to NC
We had Ari's doctor appointment in the morning, so we didn't leave on the trip itself until the afternoon. The day actually started off with us picking up the rental car (a Dodge Grand Caravan. Very nice and roomy for everyone.) We then went to the appointment. Dr Ain said Ari is doing fine and she was cleared for the trip without any extra restrictions. Basically, she was allowed to do most basic activities that a four year old would normally do. After the appointment we decided to head to Fels Point and hit Bertha's. Amanda of course got the muscles and I got a crab sandwich. Ari got a PB&J. We stopped by the waterfront and saw the tall ship that was there and the got back in the car to head home. We then packed up the van and got on the road around 2:00.
Traffic in DC was horrible as usual. There was on accident on the DC beltway so it took hours to get through the area and into Virginia. After that it was pretty smooth sailing. Stopped a few times along the way and had dinner at a Cracker Barrel. We stopped at a hotel in Roanoke Rapids, NC where the pool turned out to be closed so we had a disappointed four year old. Other than that is was a good enough hotel for an overnight stay (it was a Sleep Inn).
Day 2: NC to Charleston, SC
We left in the morning and drove to the NC/SC border. Of course we had to stop in and see South of the Border. It never really changes, but it was a little more maintained than the last time we were there. Everything had a fresh coat of paint and everything was pretty clean. We really only wanted to hit a couple of places so we started off with the arcade. Ari played some skee-ball and basketball. We got enough tickets to get her a bracelet. We then got some ice cream, stopped in one of the convenience store, got some gas and headed out.
Several hours and a few rest stops later, we made if to Charleston (by late afternoon). We headed over to the Folly's Beach section of town and went out on the pier they have there (the second longest pier on the east coast). We then went down to the beach and put our feet in. Ari got knocked over be a wave so we headed back to the car and got changed. We then walked into town and we to Folly Beach Shrimp Company for dinner. The food there was great. I has shrimp & grits. Amanda had steamed shrimp. By then the kids were tired so we headed to the hotel. We checked into the hotel (an Aloft) and got all of out luggage into the room. We did go down to the pool and let Ari and Lily swim a little. The water was cold (it was supposed to be a heated pool) so we didn't stay too long. We then went back up to the room and got ready for bed.
